We fully support these types of endeavors as they engage young scientists to think, explore, and learn about a topic that interests them. They have the opportunity to learn first hand what goes into creating and executing a research project and then presenting that research to others. This is truly an experience that will last a lifetime!

We are rewarding each of these students with honorary memberships to the Massachusetts Academy of Sciences as recognition for their outstanding achievements. Keep up the great work! To see live footage from the science fair please checkout this local TV show.

Upcoming Mass Science Fair for MS students will be held June 7, for more details see this schedule. The Massachusetts Middle School Science & Engineering Fair is a forum for students in grades 6-8 to explore through actual hands-on experience the many exciting and emerging fields of science and technology today. The first competitive Fair was held in 1999, and since that time, participation has been on the rise. However, at the 2007 Fair, attendance surpassed all previous records-a total of 267 students and 225 individual and team projects.

 Letter from the Acting Director

Massachusetts is, simply put, a hotbed of scientific research. One area of particular strength is biotechnology. Starting with the creation of Biogen in 1978 (now Biogen Idec), and Genzyme in 1981, three decades of continuous growth has led to the Commonwealth's ranking as one of the most significant biotechnology centers in the world. The Massachusetts Biotechnology Council reports..."Today, there are over 400 biotechnology companies located in the state, of which 235 are developing therapeutic drugs. Roughly 42,917 biotechnology employees in Massachusetts are responsible for over $5 billion of in-state payroll."

And that is just the tip of the iceberg. The Commonwealth is home to one of the nation's 8 Ivy League colleges (Harvard) and the nation's premier technology-based university (MIT), in addition to well over 50 top tier schools with reputations as leaders in scientific research.

The MAS Research Division is charged with supporting this vast scientific research endeavor in ways that specifically meet the needs of the State. To that end we will

The MAS exists to provide easy access to the State's research accomplishments and contribute to existing efforts to increase our competitive edge in science-based industries. We welcome comments and suggestions to help us meet these challenging and critical goals.

Sincerely,

Dr. Margaret (Peg) Riley
Acting Director of Research
