In the Spotlight

With the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation's Research Experience of Undergraduates (REU) program, the Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) on Polymers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst offers to qualifying undergraduates interested in obtaining research experience in polymer science and engineering the opportunity to join a faculty-supervised research laboratory in the UMass MRSEC for a ten-week period during the summer. The stipend for this program is $3,500 inclusive. In addition to their research responsibilities, REU participants will attend regular weekly meetings and special seminars throughout the summer. Participants are required to write a final report at the completion of the program as well as give an oral presentation.

All the Details

The Saturday Engineering Enrichment and Discovery (SEED) Academy is an academic enrichment and career exploration program for public high school students from Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts. Their mission is to increase the number of traditionally underserved local students in the pipeline to the technical workforce. They provide students with an interesting, hands-on curriculum that strengthens their foundational math, science and communication skills; a challenging learning environment with high expectations; and access to positive role models.

The Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) Program is a year-round academic enrichment opportunity provided free of charge to talented middle school students who want to get ahead in math and science.

During the summer, STEM offers a five-week Summer Institute on MIT’s campus for students entering sixth, seventh, eighth or ninth grade. Taught by MIT undergraduates, the Summer Institute courses combine lectures, projects and experiments to support learning. Participants learn college-level material, get to play a racquet sport, take field trips to places like the Museum of Science and meet some very interesting people.

Summer Pathways targets female high school students from the greater Boston area who will be entering their junior or senior year in September. The program seeks students who show promise and/or interest in science, math or engineering, and who would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend a summer enrichment program. Summer Pathways is offered entirely free of charge; students must be able to demonstrate financial need. Program participants will meet with undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, faculty, and members of industry from across disciplines, and will be given plenty of opportunity to ask questions and find out more information about various careers and the college admission process.

The Young Scholars Program offers future scientists and engineers a unique opportunity for hands-on experience while still in high school. The program is open to Boston area applicants who have completed either their sophomore or junior year in high school. The YSP program offers the change to go on field trips, get lab experience and explore career paths.
